Everything You Need to Know About Tile Adhesive by Tileox
What is Tile Adhesive?
Tile adhesive is a high-performance, polymer-modified, flexible bonding material designed to securely fix different types of tiles. These include:
Mosaic tiles
Ceramic tiles
Clay and non-vitrified tiles
Large format tiles
Engineered and natural stone tiles
Our premium tile adhesive ensures superior bonding strength, preventing tile detachment over time. It is made from Portland cement, polymers, select aggregate particles, and performance-enhancing additives. This composition enhances adhesion, flexibility, and water resistance, making it suitable for both wet and dry areas.
Why Use Tile Adhesive Instead of Cement?
Traditionally, tiles were fixed using cement mortar or slurry. However, cement has limitations:
Weak Bonding: It creates air gaps, leading to cracked or loose tiles.
More Material Usage: Requires a thicker layer, adding extra load to structures.
Poor Water Resistance: Cement does not prevent water infiltration, leading to tile damage.
Advantages of Tile Adhesive:
Thin Layer Application: Requires less material, reducing structural load.
Higher Bond Strength: Ensures tiles remain intact for a longer duration.
Flexible & Crack Resistant: Can withstand thermal and physical movements.
Waterproofing Properties: Provides superior moisture resistance, ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas.
Types of Tile Adhesives (IS 15477:2019 Standard)
Tile adhesives are categorized into five types based on their application:
Type 1: Standard Tile Adhesive
Best for small ceramic and clay tiles (<= 300mm x 300mm)
Suitable for cement-based surfaces like plaster, screed, and concrete
Type 2: Advanced Tile Adhesive
Used for vitrified, glass mosaic, and large-format tiles (> 300mm x 300mm)
Ideal for submerged areas and high-moisture environments
Type 3: Exterior Wall Tile Adhesive
Designed for tiles on plaster or concrete external walls
Works well with ceramic, vitrified, porcelain, and stone tiles
Type 4: Dry Wallboard Adhesive
Suitable for drywall substrates in addition to all Type 1, 2, and 3 applications
Not recommended for metal or engineered stones on drywall
Type 5: Specialized Adhesive for Metallic & Glass Surfaces
Specifically formulated for engineered stones and tiles on glass, aluminum, stainless steel, and other metal substrates
How to Ensure the Best Results When Using Tile Adhesive
1. Surface Preparation
Remove loose materials, dust, and debris using a sandpaper, wire brush, or water jet.
Cementitious substrates should be at least 28 days old before application.
For uneven surfaces, apply a 5mm or thicker adhesive layer.
2. Proper Mixing
Mix Tileox Tile Adhesive with clean water in the recommended ratio.
Use a heavy-duty paddle mixer for 3-5 minutes to achieve a smooth, lump-free consistency.
Ensure the mix is homogeneous and free of dry powder.
Use within the pot life for optimal results.
3. Using a Notched Trowel for Application
Apply the adhesive with a notched trowel for even distribution.
Ensure full tile coverage to prevent air gaps and weak bonding.
Choosing the Right Tile Adhesive
With multiple brands available in the market, choosing the right tile adhesive depends on tile type, surface material, and environmental conditions. Even with the best adhesive, proper surface preparation, mixing, and installation techniques are crucial for long-lasting results.
