High-Performance Solvent Cement for Industrial & Commercial Applications

High-Performance Solvent Cement for Industrial & Commercial Applications

Plastochem is a trusted name in India for providing superior-quality solvent cement solutions, ensuring strong, leak-proof joints in CPVC, UPVC, and PVC piping systems. Our solvent cements are designed for diverse industrial, commercial, and residential applications, delivering durability, chemical resistance, and reliable performance under high pressure.

Types of Solvent Cement Based on Viscosity

Solvent cement is categorized based on viscosity and application requirements. The selection of the correct type is crucial for optimal performance. According to ASTM F493 standards, the classification is as follows:

  1. Regular Bodied – Ideal for small-diameter pipes and low-pressure applications.

  2. Medium Bodied – Suitable for mid-range pipe diameters, offering balanced strength and ease of application.

  3. Heavy Bodied – Recommended for industrial and high-pressure environments, providing maximum bonding strength.

Cchoosing the Right Solvent Cement for Your Piping System

High-Performance Solvent Cement for Industrial & Commercial Applications

Selecting the right solvent cement depends on the pipe size, schedule, and application. Plastochem provides solutions for:

  • Schedule 40 Piping – General-purpose applications.

  • Schedule 80 Piping – High-pressure, industrial applications.

Importance of Using Primer for Industrial Applications

For industrial and high-pressure applications, we recommend using a primer before applying heavy-bodied solvent cement. Primers help soften the pipe and fitting surfaces, ensuring a secure bond. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to achieve the best results.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using Solvent Cement

1. Cutting the Pipe

  • Use a ratchet cutter, plastic tubing cutter, power saw, or fine-toothed saw.

  • Ensure a square cut for maximum bonding surface.

2. Removing Burrs and Filings

  • Use a chamfering tool or file to remove burrs and filings.

  • A 10-15° chamfer for pipes above 2 inches is recommended.

3. Preparing the Piping for Fitting

  • Wipe the fitting socket and pipe end with a clean, dry cloth.

  • Ensure the pipe enters the fitting socket smoothly (1/3 to 2/3 depth).

4. Applying Primer

  • Use ASTM F656-compliant primer.

  • Apply with a brush or swab (not a rag) to both the pipe and fitting socket.

5. Applying Solvent Cement

  • Use ASTM F493-compliant solvent cement.

  • Apply a heavy, even coat on the pipe end and a medium coat on the fitting socket.

  • For pipes above 2 inches, apply a second coat on the pipe end.

6. Assembling the Pipe and Fitting

  • Insert the pipe into the fitting socket and rotate slightly.

  • Hold in place for 10-30 seconds to ensure bonding.

  • A visible bead of cement around the joint indicates proper application.

7. Set and Cure Times

  • Allow proper setting time based on environmental conditions.

  • Cure times vary depending on temperature, humidity, and pipe size.

Special Considerations for Extreme Temperatures

Hot Weather Applications

  • Keep materials shaded and cool before application.

  • Work during cooler hours (morning/evening).

  • Shake cement well before use.

Cold Weather Applications

  • Store primers and cements in a warm place.

  • Use aggressive primers to enhance adhesion.

  • Extend curing times to ensure a strong bond.
